소유란 사전적으로 ‘가지고 있음. 또는 그 물건’이라는 의미를 담고 있다. 하지만 오늘날 그 의미는 단순 여기서 머물지 않고 자신의 지위를 나타내는 수단이 되기도 하며 삶의 목표를 대신하기도 한다. 오는 10월, EM은 진정한 가치를 잃은 물질에 관해 순간의 가치를 영유하기 위해 화면 위 여전히 살아있는 것들을 그리는 7인의 기록자들의 작품들로 사물의 본질을 탐구할 수 있는 시간을 가져보려고 한다.

개인의 소유는 여러 판단에 대한 합당성을 전제로 이루어지는데 이는 즉, 사물은 어떤 자기 목적도 갖고 있지 않은 상대적 형상일 뿐, 소유의 권한을 갖고 있는 것은 우리의 절대적인 자유의지라는 것으로 해석될 수 있다. 여기서 주목해야 할 정신 내지 의지의 발현은 물건에 암시되어 있는 상징적 특성, 얽혀있는 경험들로 인해 필연적으로 발생하게 되는데, 개념적 관념에서 볼 때 물건을 소비하는 과정이 가치에 대한 소비로 변하는 아이러니를 불러일으킨다. 이와 다르게 요즘의 외형주의적 행태로 사물을 보는 방식은 그 이유를 외부에 두는 경향이 있다. 이는 사물에 대한 사회적 기반으로 형성된 편견으로, 존재의 의미는 밖이 아닌 내부에서 어떠한 규정 없이 찾아내야 할 것이다.

존재하는 것과 존재하지 않는 것은 동시에 존재한다. 이런 허무적 관계론은 사실 우리가 보는 모든 것은 외면적인 것에 불과한 것이 아닐지에 대한 생각을 심어주게 되며, 안과 밖의 경계를 불분명하게 만든다. 허나 허물어진 경계는 그 이상의 의미를 유발하기도 한다. 만지고 볼 수는 없으나 더 한 가치를 지니고 있다는 것을 아는 것. 대상을 향한 생각은 변하지 않지만 감각할 수 있다는 것. 소유에서 존재의 의미로 넘어가고 더 나아가 사유로 일궈지는 이 전체의 패러다임(paradigm)은 본질에 한층 가까워지게 만들어준다.
Still life, 보이지 않는 것을 보이게 하는 예술의 힘은 새로운 시각을 제안하며 그 너머를 바라볼 수 있게 한다. 이를 통해 저마다의 살아있는 가치가 내면 어딘가에 머물러 있기를 바라본다.

The word, ‘possess’ means ‘to belong to one’ and is used as a verb ‘to possess’ or as a noun ‘possession’. Today, the word is however often substituted as a tool to exert one’s own status or sometimes it becomes one’s life goal. This October, EM presents seven artists who continue to depict life on canvas or on flat surfaces to add a sense of temporal value to objects that have lost their true values. We hope to explore the essence of objects through this exhibition.

Individual possession is premised on justification of one’s many judgements. Objects do not possess any purpose. They are simply a form that exist in relation to our purpose. Hence the authority of possession is our absolute free will. What we must pay attention to here, is that the expression of the mind or the will is implied in an object as the symbolic characteristic, necessarily caused by entangled experiences. It prompts an irony, transforming the process of object consumption to value consumption in the conceptual sense. Quite differently from that, today, the way we look at objects as materialistic forms, tends to be based on external factors. This prejudice on objects is formed by society, however, the meaning of existence should be found internally not externally and without rules and boundaries.

Existence and non-existence coexist. Such nihilistic relativism engulfs us to think that everything we see only exists externally, creating ambiguous borders between the internal and external. These collapsed borders trigger meaning beyond that. The whole paradigm of possession turning into meaning of existence and further into thoughtfulness, brings us a step closer to the essentials or the essence. We recognize the value of invisible and intangible existences and that the way we think of an object may not change but we can sense the change.
Still life, the power of art that makes the invisible visible, offers a new perspective to see beyond what is seen. We hope the value of life on an individual term stays within each of us through this experience.
