EM 갤러리는 2024년 새해의 첫 행보를 Sally Kindberg 작가의 신작 13점과 함께 한다. 현대 사회의 희비극적인 모습을 담아 우리 일상 속 유머러스한 면면을 보여주고 있는 작가는 이전 전시였던 ‘Dream Palace’(2022)의 연작으로 우리가 휴식을 취하는 공간인 ‘Lounge’에 초점을 맞춘 전시를 선보인다. TV 화면을 통해 외부 세계가 들어오는 장난스러운 공간을 경험해보자.

Lounge란 작가가 우리에게 허용한 개인적 공간으로서, 일상 속 평범한 것들과 그곳에 거주하는 이들의 관계를 작가 자신만의 안목으로 해석하였는데, 애완동물들과 사람들은 마치 아무것도 개의치 않고 공생하고, 생활 속 오브제들은 이 초현실적인 Lounge 세상에서 개성 있는 참여자로 변화한다. 이와 같은 반복된 주제들에 대한 다수의 변형은 삶에서 즐거움 그리고 묘한 모순을 불러 일으키며, 상호 연결된 힘들은 다른 관점들의 콜라주로서 하나의 공간으로 서로 모이게 된다. 작품 속 버블, 불꽃 그리고 스크린들은 양면적 관점을 제공하는데, 과연 전시는 아포칼립스 속 열리는 것인지 아니면 편안한 복장과 슬리퍼 차림의 우리의 편안한 밤인지는 우리가 결정할 수 있다.

작가는 인식 가능한 유머와 긴장감이 깃든 장면들을 쌓아 화면 간의 리듬을 창조해낸다. 나아가 흥미로운 작품의 제목들은 그 리듬을 한층 리드미컬하게 만들어주고 보는 이들의 상상력에 도화선 역할을 하는데, - TV 화면 속 비춰지는 사람은 갤러리 팔로워일까?

작품이 주는 경쾌한 긴장감으로 삶의 다양한 변주를 경험해 보기를 바란다.

EM Gallery are excited to start the new year with thirteen new works from Sally Kindberg, following on from her previous EM exhibition ‘Dream Palace’ (2022). Outwardly playful but deeply reflective of our modern world, the artist depicts moments of humour and tragedy in our everyday life: This time centering her focus on the Lounge, a room where we relax, a playful space where the outside world enters via the TV screen. 

The Lounge is a personal space where the artist has allowed us in, using her eye to translate the relationships between the everyday homely things and the inhabitants. Pets and people cohabit as if no one is watching, the practical objects switch into characterful participants in this surreal Lounge world. Multiple twists of repeated themes echo funny and odd contradictions in life, interconnected forces come together as a collage of different dimensions into one room. Bubbles, flames and screens offer a two sided view of the world; is the show set during an apocalypse or a cosy night in with our loungewear and slippers on? You decide.

Kindberg creates a rhythm with the works, building a scene with humour and tension that we recognise, playfully using the titles as added pointers, building layers of imagination triggers for the viewer…Is that the gallery Instagrammer reflected in the TV screen?
