창작의 자유라는 이름 아래 다양한 생각이 최소한의 필터링으로 표현되는 예술 분야는 우리가 속한 사회를 날 것으로 읽을 수 있기에 역사적 사료로서의 가치를 충분히 지니고 있다. 이러한 이유에서 다른 분야보다 예술 작품 속 여성은 다양한 모습으로 재현되어지는데, 오늘날 여성성이란 어떠한 의미를 지니고 있으며, 어떻게 표현되고 있을까? 갤러리 EM은 2023년 마지막 전시의 주제로 ‘여성성’을 선정, 여성 작가들의 작품 속 표현되어지는 그들의 여성성을 통해 그 의미를 재고하고 주제에 관한 담론의 장을 제공하고자 한다

사회 및 타자가 규정한 ‘제2의 성’으로써의 존재는 남성성과 대척점을 이루며 여성을 객체로써 존재하게 한다. 이 문제점의 해결책으로 주장하는 성별을 떠나 나답게 살 것을 추구하는 현대 사회는 성별 고정관념으로부터의 탈피가 아닌 성차를 무화(無化) 시키는 오류를 범한다고 할 수 있으며, 이는 성차를 존중하고 이해하는 것이 아닌 또 다른 억압으로 느껴지기도 한다.

이번 전시에서 선보이는 8인의 작가들은 본인의 작품을 통해 각자가 생각하는 여성성에 대해 자유로이 표현하였으며, 이들의 작품 속 여성은 사실적이고 비유적이며 때론 추상적인 모습 등 다양한 그림체로 묘사되는데, 이성 관찰자(남성 작가)의 시선에서 그려진 수동적인 시각 객체로서의 여성이 아닌, 여성 작가 스스로의 정체성에 대한 표현이라고 할 수 있기에 불변적 속성인 성차를 주체적으로 정의 내리고 명명함을 볼 수 있다.

예술의 목적은 문제에 대한 해결 방안을 제시하는 것이 아닌 사회 다방면의 문제의식을 공유하여 더 나은 사회를 추구함에 있다. 다채로운 색감과 다양한 형태의 미감을 지닌 각각의 작품들과 같이, 현대 사회 속 여성성이란 하나의 모습이 아닌 개개인의 고유성을 만나 그 빛을 발하기에, 감상을 통해 사회적 시각과 가치로 일방적으로 규정된 여성성이 아닌 주체로서 자신의 존재를 경험하게 되기를, 자유의지를 가지고 자신의 존재를 적극적으로 개척해 나가기를 바란다.

Art embraces diverse thoughts under its mission to support creative freedom with minimal filtering. Art deserves a valued place in the historical record as it allows us to interpret the rawness of the society we belong to. Women are portrayed in a variety of ways in art more so than in any other genres. Then what does ‘femininity’ mean and how is it expressed today? Gallery EM chose ‘femininity’ as the topic of our final exhibition of 2023.

The exhibition explores how female artists express femininity in their work and offers a platform to rethink the meaning of femininity and create discourses around the subjects through their work. Existing as the ‘second sex’ defined by society and others, places women on the antipodal position from masculinity as objective existence. Contemporary society pursues a way of living beyond gender issues, where individuals seek to live in their own way of being. This does not shed from the gender stereotypes but is in fact erroneously negating the gender differences. This approach does not respect nor comprehend the differences but rather feels like another form of oppression.

The eight artists presented in the exhibition freely depict their individual thoughts on femininity through their works. The female figures in their works are portrayed in painting styles from realistic, metaphorical, and at times abstract. The artists address their own identity issues as women rather than passively being objectified from the gaze of the other sex (male artist). They assert in defining and naming the immutable qualities of gender differences.

The purpose of art is not to offer a solution to a problem but to share the awareness of the issues at hand in various aspects of society and pursue a better world. Like these artworks with diverse colors and forms of aesthetics, femininity in contemporary society is not a single unified form but alights with individual uniqueness. Through the works, we hope you can aspire to go beyond the socially driven and one-sided frame of visuals and values of femininity. Instead, we hope you experience your own existence as a protagonist, actively pioneering your own presence with free will.
