Leave/Live(떠나다/살다)

Leave/Live
Auto Moai depicts the insignificance of an individual presence in a mass society and the frailty of self perceived by others, as a faceless crowd. In this exhibition, we would like to tell the story of 'what one gains from loss' in a paradoxical expression 'blessing of a loss'.

Being together means to continuously lose oneself.
We promise eternal love in relationships while life is fluid. To expect such solidity in a relationship when life constantly shifts in nature is meaningless. Being together with others means to perpetually lose oneself. The desire to depend on and be recognized by others clashes with the idea of living as a subjective agent appreciating individual autonomy. The artist’s message of living as true self through separating oneself from a relationship, creates a space to think about the illusion of eternal constant and flexibility of life.

The lamb in the work in this exhibition envelops the allegory of 'sacrificial offering for a sin'. Thus, we see the unification with others as a sin to the individual self identity rather than a blessing. Love is the subject of a sin.
The impasto(method of creating textural sensation through applying thick layers of painting) in the works recreates a sensation of time(Zeitlichkeit) like that of the ancient cave painting, a sensation that is invisible to the eyes through its texture. The artist further explores the conventional value of loss and blessing formed throughout the history of time by using anime aesthetics.

We gain freedom from constant shifts. We are transforming even at this moment in time as we observe and feel the work and the self. To be free exists solely through self will. Through this exhibition, we hope you enjoy the free existence of self.
