다양한 영역을 아우르며 끊임없이 우리의 시대를 증명해내고자 하는 ‘IVAAIU City’의 전시가 시작된다. Idea, Visual, Audio, Architecture, Infrastructure, Urbanism를 뜻하는 이 그룹은 서울과 도쿄를 기반으로 활동중이며 다양한 장르의 아티스트들이 모여 현 도시에 대한 고찰을 한다. 이번 전시는 그들의 이런 프로젝트 중 사람들에게 새로운 ‘빛’을 전달하기 위한 고귀한 발돋움이다.

문득 길을 걷다 눈에 닿는 빛을 하염없이 보게 되는 순간이 있다. 낮과 밤, 해와 달 그리고 그 사이의 새벽. 이 어지러운 세상을 살아나가기 위해 하루의 시작과 끝을 경험하고 있는 우리는 마주보는 이 빛에 설레임보다 서글픔을 느끼는 날이 많다. 꿈벅 꿈벅 고된 눈빛 안에 서려있는 빛은 칠흑같이 어두워 보이지만 빛은 어떤 모양과 형태로든지 우리 안에 새겨져 있다. 어둠이 나를 잠시 고립시키더라도 이내 우리들은 빛을 향해 가던 길을 또 다시, 언제나 걸어 갈 것이다.

‘Let there be light’ 전시는 하나의 프리즘을 연상시킨다. 도시 속 수많은 콘크리트에 흘러나오는 빛, 파편화 되었지만 여전히 빛을 머금고 있는 자연들, 그리고 우리들이 함께 만들어내는 소리와 다양한 삶의 순간들을 그들만의 방식으로 아름답고 선명한 색상으로 분류해주기 때문이다. 그럼으로써 우리의 공간은 소음이 아닌 음악으로 가득 차게 되고, 빛은 우리의 유일무이한 언어가 되어버린다. 이들은 도시의 아름다운 이면을 객관적인 시선으로 켜켜이 녹여낸 작품들로 잊고 있었던 우리의 가치를 다시금 꺼내볼 수 있길 바라며 희망의 빛은 언제 어디서를 막론하고 바로 여기에 언제나 있다는 것을 일깨운다. 무한한 빛이 존재하는 한 편의 시를 가슴속으로 느껴보길 바란다.

빛은 광대하지만 틈이 작으면 작을수록 더 선명하게 느껴진다. 우리네 복잡한 도시 속 화려한 불빛에 가려져 내 마음의 빛을 보지 못한다 하더라도 언제나 우리는 꺼지지 않고 발광하고 있다는 것을 알아야 한다. 안과 밖 모든 빛들이 나를 찾을 수 있도록 스스로 고개 들게 되기를.


몹시 외롭고 깜깜한 어둠.

어디로 가야 하는지 무엇을 의지해야 하는지,
아무것도 모르고 막막하고 먹먹한 마음들만 가득했던 날들.

누구에게나 처음인 오늘.
길고도 긴 밤의 끝이 지나고 난 뒤 새벽이 찾아왔다.

찬란하고 아름다운 빛의 찬연함.
거기에 있고 여기에 있고, 언제나 있었다.

IVAAIU City is a collective based in Seoul and Tokyo. IVAAIU stands for Idea, Visual Audio, Architecture, Infrastructure and Urbanism. The collective works in multiple disciplines with artists from various genres, making continuous efforts to materialize the contemporary era. The projects attempt to reflect on the current urban environment. The exhibition ‘Let there be light’ is a step towards bringing new ‘light’ to people.

We find moments when we simply gaze at the light that meets our eyes. As we strive to survive in this precarious world and experience the beginning and end of a day throughout the sun and the moon and all the in-betweens, we have more days feeling sorrow than excitement in this light. The light flickering in our eyes seems as dark as the muddy soil on our feet yet light lives within us in many shapes and forms. This darkness may momentarily isolate us, but we will continue and again and again, walk down the path towards the light.

The exhibition, ‘Let there be light’ resonates a type of prism. It expresses the vivid colors of light that finds its way out from the concrete piles of the city; the omnipresent and scattered light in nature; the sounds we make together; and the various moments in life. The space we’re in shifts from noise to music and light becomes our sole form of communication. The works portray the beauty of urban landscape in an objective perspective hoping for the viewers to awaken important values and remind the viewers that light is always around wherever they are, to feel the poetry of infinite light with their heart.

Light is expansive and the smaller the gap, the more intense it gets. Our inner light may be hidden among the busy and shiny city lights, but we must recognize that the light within us is always shining. We hope to raise our heads so the lights inside and out can find us.


The lonely and grim darkness.
Where to go and where to lean on,
the days are full of grim uncertainties.
This is yet another first day for all of us,
dawn comes upon us after the long long night ends.
The light that shines
is here and there and has always been.
