‘The Jaunt’ is an art project presenting artists with new experiences to open up further opportunities and possibilities in their creative process. The word ‘jaunt’ means a short journey for pleasure, and this project intends to do just that, by supporting artists to move forward on their creative journey with fresh insights. From January 18th, EverydayMooonday presents ‘The Jaunt’ by twenty artists who participated in the project with the works created through this journey.

The first step of the project ‘The Jaunt’ is to remove the artists from their comfort zone completely and connect them to a whole new environment. It challenges them to leave to a whole new and unexpected place somewhere in the world. Each artist arrives at the destination he or she is given and there the artist observes and digests the local impressions and inspirations from his or her own perspective. The people they encounter, the local coffee, small antiques, neoclassical architecture and crowded tourist attractions are among the many things the artist will come across and intersect with. Their travels are made visible online through blogs and personal social platforms, with recordings of their adventures and impressions. This becomes a path to understanding the artist’s perspective better. As every place and individual person is different, each trip is unique. The artist returns home, depicts his or her emotion of the unfamiliar place through the work and prints a screenprint with limited number of editions. The artworks become a special form of travel documentation. Screen prints with limited editions are sold before they’re made. The audiences purchase the prints only knowing the artist’s name and his or her destination but without knowing what kind of work will be created. This allows the audience to contribute to this project and at the same time see and experience together the creative process from a closer approximation.

‘A space that you’re so familiar with and stepping into an unknown place beyond your cultural boundaries; a time as a stranger far from your daily environment yet trapped in a racial and gender stereotype category.’ Contrary to the excitement and hopeful mood we feel from the word ‘travel’ or ‘journey’, there are feelings of fear, unpleasantry or sometimes even a lack of freshness in being in a strange place. Still, you cannot expect these unexpected experiences and impressions without traveling.
