뉴욕 브루클린을 기반으로 활동 중인 아티스트 윤협의 개인전 Line&Dot이 에브리데이몬데이 갤러리에서 열린다. ‘태어난 고향’ 서울과 ‘제 2의 고향’이 된 뉴욕, 그 밖에 여러 풍경들이 준 인상들과 작가가 경험했던 희로애락을 담은 페인팅 작업들이 선보여질 예정이다.

‘선과 점은 가장 기본적이며 동시에 무한한 가능성을 가진 나의 언어’

작가는 어린 시절부터 스케이트보드 문화와 힙합, 훵크(Funk), 그래피티 등의 영향을 받으며 성장 했다. 점과 선을 사용한 즉흥 페인팅 작업을 하기 시작한 것은 그가 20대 초반이 되었던 2004년, 당시 다양한 분야의 스트릿 아티스트들이 자발적으로 모여 즐겼던 파티에서 DJ는 음악을 틀었고 윤협 작가는 대형 캔버스에 붓을 들고 시각적 음악을 연주하듯 리드미컬하게 그림을 그려 나가곤 했다.  작가의 손 끝에 모든 이목이 집중되는 무대나 거리의 벽에도 그림을 그릴 때는 시간과 공간적 제약 속에서 순발력을 요하는데, 윤협 작가에게 그것은 부담이기 보다 긍정적인 도전이자 양분이 되었으며 그 시기에 경험했던  강렬한 인상은 그의 작업에도 크고 작은 영향을 주었다. 

스케치 없이 바로 들어가는 윤협 작가의 선과 점은 평면 위에서 리듬이 되고, 색상의 배합은 시각적인 화음이 되어 마치 재즈 연주자들의 잼 세션처럼 여러 이야기들이 탄생 하고 또 함께 조화를 이루어 나간다. 흘러가는 듯 한 움직임과 율동, 진행하는 에너지를 담은 선, 작고 단순하면서도 중요한 것을 품고 있는 점. 때로는 미로 같아 보이기도 하고, 소리처럼 들리기도 하고 때로는 스케이트보드를 타고 미로같은 도시 속을 달리는 궤적으로도 보이기도 하다. 페인팅 작업 이외에도 공공장소의 벽화, 브랜드 콜라보레이션 작업을 해왔다. 대표적으로 나이키 코리아, 나이키 월드 헤드쿼터, 허프HUF, 치넬리Cinelli, 메디콤Medicom, 유니버셜 뮤직Universal Music Group, 페이스북 Facebook 등의 협업 프로젝트가 있다. 뉴욕, 밀라노, 상해, 홍콩, 샌프란시스코, 빌바오 등 세계 여러 도시에서  갤러리와 뮤지엄 전시등을 선보여 왔으며, 서울에서는 어언 7년 만에 열리는 개인전이기에 감회가 더 새롭다.

Finnish born, London based artist Annu Kilpeläinen graduated from the London College of Communication in 2010. In the years since, her vibrant paintings and illustrations have seen her works exhibited internationally around the world including Portland Oregon, Los Angeles California, Tallinn Estonia and Sydney Australia. This is her first time exhibiting in Seoul, Korea.

Within this exhibition her style collides into a kaleidoscope of color, pattern and form - which brings to life the two dimensional surfaces on which she paints. Somewhere between a comic and a painting, Annu Kilpeläinen's work explores obsessions with modern Transport, Time, Repetition and Nature. Along with her unending fascination with bold, bright colors, Annu is able to explore these themes with playful humor in her new show Keep Tomorrow Free. A quote from artist/poet David Robilliard, the words serve as reminder to allow yourself to exist in the moment, removing the pressure and anxiety that come with being alive in our modern world.

Keep Tomorrow Free looks at moments in time as a subjective dimension in an individual life. How time is warped with memory, experiences of touch remain intact while time around these disappears. These moments that make you forget about the outer world are crucial in today’s politically charged world of daily breaking headlines.
