일본 피규어 일러스트레이터 데하라 유키노리는 작년 여름, 개인전 ‘Strange friends in the hood’에서 80여점의 피규어를 선보였다. 그의 캐릭터들은 일반적인 귀여움과는 꽤 다른 노선을 타고 있다, 그래서 처음 마주한 관객들에게는 여러 면에서 신선한 충격을 주었고, 암암리 포진해 있었던 국내 팬들에게는 반가운 소식이 아닐 수 없었다.

데하라의 작업은 제도권의 정공법적인 작업과는 거리가 멀다. 특정한 형식이나 규범에 구애 받지 않으며 폭력이나 성과 관련된 사회적으로 금기되고 검열의 대상이 되는 요소들도 개의치 않는다. 오히려 위트를 섞어 적나라하게 표현한다. 대중적이지는 않지만 일부 특정 관객들로부터 열광적인 지지를 받는 컬트 영화와 여러 면에서 궤도를 같이한다.

지난 전시에서 다양한 캐릭터들을 보여주고 소개하는데 중점을 두었다면 이번에는 ‘Pink’를 테마로 색에 중점을 두었다. 분홍색은 좀처럼 색안경을 벗고 보기가 어려운 색이다. 일반적으로 여자아이, 여성스러움을 대표하는 색이라는 생각이 뇌리에 깊이 박혀있기 때문이다. 여자 아이들이 분홍색에 병적으로 집착하게 된 것은 1940년 이후부터 시작되어 서서히 굳어진 경향이다. 부드러운 난색으로 편안하고 온화한 색임은 분명 하지만 한편으로 피부에 핏기가 도는 것과 같이 활력 있고 역동적인 기운을 담고 있기도 하다. 실제로 조선시대나 19세기 유럽에서도 붉은색과 분홍색은 호전적이고 남성적인 색으로 여겨 전투복을 비롯한 의복에 사용되기도 했다고 한다. 이 색이 어떤 특정의 성이나 분위기를 대표한다는 선입견은 이제 접어버리고 데하라의 작업에서는 어떻게 쓰이고 표현되는지 느껴보았으면 한다.

나의 얼간이 같은 작업들은 특별한 의미가 담겨있다기 보다 감정적인 것에 가깝다.
핑크가 없다면 내 작업은 완성되지 않을 것이다. 핑크는 내 영혼이다.

Japanese figure illustrator, Dehara Yukinori, presented over eighty works in his solo show "Strange friends in the hood' last summer. His characters have quite a different direction from ordinary cute figures. It brought a fresh shock to first time viewers in many ways. For those viewers and Korean fans who have been waiting silently, this is truly welcoming news.

Dehara's works are far from the systematic and standard characters. He does not limit his works to specific form or regulations. He does not hesitate to use elements of socially tabooed or censored objects of violence and sex. Instead, he expresses them candidly with wit. His works share the track of cult films in many aspects in that they may not be popular to the mass but are fanatically supported by specific groups of viewers.

Dehara focused on introducing various characters in his last exhibition. In this solo show, he focuses on 'Pink' as a theme, a color that is essential in his work. Pink is a color with certain preconceptions. Generally, it is deeply embedded in our minds as the color that represents women and femininity. Young girls begin to morbidly obsess over the color Pink since 1940 and gradually this became an average tendency. Pink is definitively a soft, warm color of comfort and gentile. Yet it has another side to it. It encompasses a lively and active mood like that of the pink blood tone on skin tone. In fact, during the Joseon Dynasty and 19t Century Europe, it is told that red and pink were considered favorable and masculine. Hence it was used in combat uniforms as well as in other men's clothing. Let's put aside the bias that Pink symbolizes a certain sex or mood and let us feel it as it is used and expressed in Dehara's works.
