코어스 작업은 근본적인 고통과 슬픔, 외로움 등 다소 어두운 내용의 우화가 바탕이 된다. 코어스의 동물 혹은 사람 캐릭터가 언뜻 귀여워 보이다가도 이내 적막함과 슬픔이 엿보이는 것도 이 때문 일 것이다. 너구리와 물고기의 절박하고 험난한 여정을 담은 이야기 'COLD WAY'는 로스엔젤레스를 기반으로 활동하는 작가 앤드류 그린버그(Andrew Greenberg)와 함께 첫 그림책으로 출판 되었다. COLD WAY에는 힘겹게 집으로 가는 길을 찾는 라쿤과 허황된 말로 순진한 라쿤을 속여 자신이 바다로 다다르기 위한 수단으로 이용하려는 사악한 물고기가 등장한다. 부정, 거짓과 배신의 이야기의 전반적으로 어둡고 묘한 긴장감은 잔상이 되어 코어스 조각 위에 오버랩 되어 보여진다. 라쿤과 물고기의 크고 새까만 눈 깊숙이 내재하는 욕망과 맹목적인 믿음이 가져올 불행이 보이는 듯 하다. 그것은 결국 계속해서 숨기려 하는 우리 내면의 취약한 점들을 드러내고 있다는 점에 또 한번 서늘함을 느낀다.

코어스는 최근 시리즈 'Do you remember?'과 'How could I forget '와 같은 작업에서 직접적으로 시간의 흐름을 표현하며 이에 따르는 인간의 마음에 대하여 탐구한다. 피부는 탄력을 잃고 구부정한 신체의 노인과 작고 아직 미성숙한 어린 아이가 등장한다. 노인은 놀이터에서 어느새 너무도 멀어져 버린 유년의 나, 흑백의 어린아이를 기억 속 안개를 해쳐 소환한 듯하다. 지금 나는 저 아이로부터 얼마나 어떻게 멀어져 왔는가 어린 내가 상상해 보았던 세상과 실제 내가 걸어온 길은 어떻게 달랐던가 그런 생각을 하고 있을까? 아니면 더 이상은 희망을 쫓지 않는 메마른 자신을 보면서 공허해하고 있지는 않을까?

투박하고 거칠다는 뜻의 COARSE. 그러나 역설적이게도 COARSE의 조각들은 하나같이 흠잡을 수 없을 만큼 매끄럽다. 독일 출신의 그래픽 디자이너이자 아티스트인 마크 란트비어(Mark Landwehr)와 스벤 바스크(Sven Washk) 두 아티스트로 이루어진 COARSE는 2003년부터 평면 드로잉을 나무, 레진, 바이닐을 사용한 입체 조형으로 만들기 시작했다. 그들은 자신들이 만든 조각과 초자연적 배경 속에 몰입 하는데 방해 되지 않도록 작은 디테일 하나까지 고도로 심혈을 기울이며 기술적 한계 속에서 가능한 한 최고치의 결과물을 위해 많은 노력을 해왔다. 한국에서는 첫 전시를 가지는 코어스는 그들만의 독특한 조형 스타일로 만든 레진 오리지널 피규어, 한정판 바이닐 피규어 작업 들을 엄선하여 선보일 예정이다.

COARSE's works are based on rather grim allegories of fundamental emotions of pain, sorrow and loneliness. The animal and human characters seem charming at first glance yet there is a sense of isolation and sadness. A story of a raccoon and a fish on their desperate and rugged journey, 'COLD WAY' was first published as an illustrated book in collaboration with a Los Angeles based artist Andrew Greenberg. In 'COLD WAY', there are two characters, a raccoon struggling to find its way home and an evil fish that deceives the naive raccoon with false words to find its way back to the sea. The overall gloomy and eerie tension in this story of denial, lies and betrayal, show through in their sculpture works. Inside the large, dark and deep eyes of the raccoon and fish are glimpses of misery, the desire and blind trust will bring to them. We feel a chill down the spines from the stories that expose weaknesses that we continuously try to hide.

COARSE's recent series of works 'Do you remember?' and 'How could I forget' directly portray the flow of time and explore human emotions accordingly. There is an elderly, hunched back character of wrinkly skin and a small, young and immature child. The old man summons the black and white pictured child from his memory, his childhood, now far away from the playgrounds he used to play in. Is he contemplating on how far he's come away from that child; how different the world he had imagined as a child and the path he chose to walk in is? Or is he simply reflecting on his loss of hope and feeling of void.

COARSE means rough and harsh yet they paradoxically create works that are smooth without a single flaw. Born in Germany, a graphic designer and artist Mark Landwehr and Sven Washk started creating three dimensional sculptures with wood, resin and vinyl based on their two dimensional drawings in 2003. In creating the sculptures and focusing on the supernatural environment, they have worked hard in maximizing the materialization within technical limitations, working on each and every small detail.This is their first exhibition in Korea and COARSE will be presenting a series of carefully selected sculptural resin original figures and limited edition vinyl figures.
